amapiano

Amapiano is a South African dance genre that emerged from the townships around Pretoria and Johannesburg in the early 2010s. Its sound combines the spacious feel of deep house with kwaito’s township groove, jazz-influenced piano chords, gospel harmonies, and the distinctive, resonant log-drum bass. Midtempo and often built around looping percussion, airy keys, bass-heavy drops, and subtly shifting rhythmic layers, it favors hypnotic movement and atmosphere over the tightly compressed structures of mainstream pop or contemporary R&B.

Although it may share Afrobeats’ celebratory energy and increasingly supports melodic vocal performances, amapiano is defined by its South African rhythmic vocabulary, spacious production, and emphasis on the groove as much as the song. Its range runs from soulful, jazz-tinged “private school” piano to harder-edged, percussion-driven styles associated with artists and collectives such as Samthing Soweto, Mas Musiq, TXC, uLazi, DJ Black Low, Djy Bongz, Soa Mattrix, and Blaqnick & Masterblaq. It is music designed to unfold gradually: immersive in headphones, but most fully realized on a dance floor.
