aria

An aria is a formally shaped vocal composition, usually for a solo singer with instrumental accompaniment, that gives a character or speaker the opportunity to express emotion, reflect, or display vocal technique. The form developed prominently in seventeenth-century Italian opera and reached great variety during the Baroque and Classical periods, from the ornate da capo arias of Handel and Alessandro Stradella to Mozart’s dramatically integrated numbers. In later opera, composers such as Rossini, Verdi, and Wagner expanded the aria’s possibilities, sometimes blending it into a continuous dramatic flow rather than presenting it as a clearly separate piece.

Unlike opera as a whole—which encompasses plot, staging, ensembles, choruses, recitative, and orchestral music—an aria concentrates on a single expressive moment. Its character may be lyrical, virtuosic, comic, devotional, or intensely dramatic, and it can also appear in oratorios, cantatas, and concert programs outside a staged work. Recordings by singers such as Kiri Te Kanawa, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Maria Bieșu, and Vivica Genaux demonstrate how phrasing, diction, ornamentation, and vocal color shape the genre across different historical styles. Aria is best experienced as opera’s intimate spotlight: a concentrated meeting of melody, theatrical character, and the human voice.
