baggy

Baggy is a late-1980s and early-1990s British guitar-dance style that fused indie rock’s jangling or psychedelic guitars with the rhythms of acid house, funk, and rave. Its characteristic sound combines rolling bass lines, loose, syncopated drumming, samples or sequenced beats, and an easygoing, often communal groove—music intended as much for movement as for guitar-band listening. The term emerged from the club and fashion culture surrounding northern English “Madchester,” and is sometimes used interchangeably with it, though baggy can also describe the broader crossover beyond Manchester.

The Stone Roses, The Charlatans, Inspiral Carpets, The Soup Dragons, Flowered Up, and The Shamen exemplify its range, from shimmering, melodic psychedelia to more overtly electronic and acid-house-inflected tracks. Unlike Britpop’s generally more traditional songcraft, baggy foregrounds rhythm and dance-floor momentum; unlike dream pop or chillwave, it is typically brighter, more physical, and less concerned with enveloping atmosphere. Its appeal lies in that productive collision of indie guitars and rave energy: loose, euphoric, and unmistakably rooted in a moment when rock audiences and club culture began to converge.
