Bard is a genre rooted in the tradition of solo singer-songwriters who accompany themselves on acoustic instruments, typically guitar, while delivering narrative-driven or poetically charged lyrics. Originating from medieval minstrel traditions and evolving through 20th-century folk movements, the genre emphasizes storytelling, social commentary, and personal reflection over elaborate production. Unlike mainstream folk, which often incorporates ensemble arrangements and regional instrumentation, bard music centers on the individual performer's voice and lyrical craft, with minimal instrumental embellishment. It diverges from Celtic traditions by favoring universal or contemporary themes rather than mythological or regional folklore, and from rock by eschewing amplification and rhythmic intensity in favor of intimate acoustic delivery.

The genre holds particular cultural significance in Russian-language traditions, where "bard" (avtorskaya pesnya) became a vehicle for dissident expression and poetic artistry during the Soviet era, distinguished from Western folk by its literary depth and often satirical edge.
