Beach goth is a loose coastal style associated most strongly with Southern California’s late-2000s and 2010s underground, particularly Costa Mesa’s The Growlers, who helped popularize the term. It combines surf-rock guitar twang and reverb with garage-rock roughness, psychedelic haze, lo-fi production, and the detached pulse of new wave. The result is often mid-tempo and deliberately unpolished: tremolo guitars, organ or synthesizer color, dusty drums, and weary, nasal vocals support songs about romance, alienation, intoxication, drifting, and the uneasy underside of beach-town life.
Unlike straightforward surf rock, beach goth is less concerned with instrumental exuberance or nostalgia for an idealized coastline. Its sun-bleached atmosphere is offset by murky textures, sardonic writing, and a sense of urban or emotional decay; compared with psychedelic rock, its experiments tend to remain compact, catchy, and song-focused. The genre is best understood as an aesthetic and scene as much as a strict musical formula, encompassing artists and records that turn laid-back coastal imagery into something strange, melancholic, and faintly sinister. It rewards listeners who enjoy familiar pop instincts viewed through a fogged motel window.
