Brazilian reggae is the adaptation of Jamaican reggae to Brazil’s Portuguese-language musical culture, combining reggae’s offbeat guitar, deep bass, steady groove, and socially conscious spirit with local rhythmic sensibilities and melodic traditions. It began gaining visibility in the 1970s, particularly in Bahia, where artists such as Gilberto Gil helped connect reggae’s Rastafari- and roots-oriented vocabulary with MPB. Over time, regional scenes developed distinctive approaches, from roots reggae and dub-influenced production to lighter, more melodic forms shaped by Brazilian pop and rock.
The genre is generally less tied to Jamaican imitation than to the use of reggae as a framework for Brazilian perspectives on inequality, spirituality, love, urban life, and cultural identity. Groups including Cidade Negra, Tribo de Jah, Natiruts, Edson Gomes, Planta & Raiz, Chimarruts, Mato Seco, and Cidade Verde Sounds represent its varied spectrum, while artists such as Armandinho bring it into dialogue with acoustic songwriting and surf-oriented pop. Compared with ska, Brazilian reggae is usually slower and more bass-centered, and unlike mainstream pop it retains a pronounced emphasis on groove, message, and communal performance. Its appeal lies in the balance between relaxed movement and lyrical conviction: music that invites both dancing and reflection.
