crabcore

Crabcore is a late-2000s strain of scene-era metalcore and post-hardcore, named for the low, wide-legged “crab” stance popularized by its performers during breakdowns. Its sound combines down-tuned riffing, harsh vocals, clean sing-along choruses, abrupt breakdowns, and prominent electronic or trance-influenced synths. The style emerged alongside internet-driven scenecore culture, particularly through bands such as Attack Attack!, Abandon All Ships, early Woe, Is Me, and related acts.

Compared with electronic-leaning trancecore, crabcore is more strongly defined by metalcore’s breakdown-centered songwriting and performance imagery; unlike screamo, it generally favors polished production, rhythmic heaviness, and catchy choruses over sustained emotional abrasion. Often used humorously or pejoratively, the term nonetheless captures a distinct moment when flashy synths, exaggerated stage moves, and mosh-ready heaviness collided. Its unapologetic excess makes it an entertaining snapshot of late-2000s heavy music—and an influential one for later electronicore and internet-bred metal scenes.
