death punk

Death punk is a dark, abrasive strain of punk rock that combines fast, confrontational songwriting with heavy guitar riffs, hard-rock weight, and grotesque or horror-inflected imagery. The term is particularly associated with the Scandinavian underground of the 1990s and 2000s, where bands such as Turbonegro fused hardcore urgency with swaggering rock ’n’ roll, glam theatrics, and a deliberately decadent sense of humor. Related acts including Doctor Midnight & The Mercy Cult and Dracula Biscuits reflect the style’s taste for menace, excess, and theatrical provocation.

Unlike straightforward punk, death punk often leans into metallic sonics, pounding grooves, and a more imposing stage persona; unlike glam punk, its flamboyance is typically grimy, macabre, or nihilistic rather than celebratory. It can overlap with death rock and hardcore, but is generally less concerned with gothic atmosphere or relentless extremity than with making loud, catchy, sleazy rock music feel dangerous. It is an ideal listen for anyone drawn to punk’s irreverence but wanting heavier riffs, darker imagery, and a larger-than-life sense of chaos.
