electro-jazz

Electro-jazz is a hybrid of jazz improvisation and electronic production, combining instruments such as saxophone, trumpet, piano, and electric bass with synthesizers, drum machines, sequencers, sampling, and studio processing. Its roots lie in the electric jazz and jazz-fusion experiments of the late 1960s and 1970s—particularly the work of musicians such as Herbie Hancock—while later artists expanded the vocabulary through digital textures, programmed rhythms, and contemporary sound design.

Unlike electronic music that merely incorporates jazz color, electro-jazz generally retains jazz’s emphasis on harmonic interplay, soloing, and spontaneous performance. It overlaps with nu jazz but can be more explicitly rooted in electric fusion and experimental studio technique, without requiring nu jazz’s club-oriented or genre-blending agenda. Nor is it synonymous with electro swing: its rhythmic language may draw on funk, broken beat, ambient music, or abstract electronics rather than swing-era motifs. Recordings associated with Herbie Hancock, Craig Taborn, Goran Kajfeš, Laurent de Wilde, and Paolo Rustichelli illustrate its range, from groove-driven fusion to spacious, exploratory soundscapes. It is a compelling listen for anyone interested in the point where jazz’s improvisational freedom meets the precision and sonic possibilities of electronic production.
