electrotango

Electrotango is a late-1990s and early-2000s fusion of Argentine and Uruguayan tango with electronic production. It preserves tango’s bandoneón-led melancholy, syncopated pulse, and dramatic phrasing while adding programmed beats, samples, loops, synthesizers, dub-influenced bass, and studio manipulation. Emerging from the renewed international interest in tango nuevo, it is generally more beat-oriented and club-conscious than traditional tango, without abandoning the genre’s tension, sensuality, and distinctly Río de la Plata atmosphere.

Gotan Project helped bring the style to global attention, while Bajofondo, Tanghetto, Otros Aires, Narcotango, Supervielle, San Telmo Lounge, Federico Aubele, and Carlos Libedinsky have explored its varied directions—from atmospheric downtempo and lounge textures to harder, dancefloor-focused rhythms. Unlike electronic music that merely samples tango, electrotango typically treats tango’s instrumental language and rhythmic identity as compositional foundations. It is an inviting entry point for listeners drawn to both the intimacy of tango and the immersive momentum of modern production.
