Jangle is a guitar-centered style defined by bright, chiming arpeggios and ringing open-string chords, often produced by twelve-string or clean electric guitars. Its roots lie in the folk-rock of the 1960s, particularly the layered guitar sound associated with the Byrds, and it re-emerged prominently in post-punk and independent music. The emphasis is on melodic guitar interplay and a crisp, resonant texture rather than on heavy distortion, electronic atmosphere, or overtly polished pop production.
