jortscore

Jortscore is a loose, tongue-in-cheek strain of DIY punk and pop punk built around brisk tempos, compact songwriting, ragged guitars, and highly memorable choruses. The term evokes the genre’s deliberately unpolished, everyday aesthetic—more basement shows, jorts, and communal singalongs than polished pop production—while its lyrics often balance romantic frustration, insecurity, boredom, and wry self-deprecation.

Associated with bands such as Joyce Manor, Chumped, and The Ergs!, jortscore sits between the directness of punk rock, the hooks of pop punk, and the emotional candor of emo. Unlike more polished pop-punk, it favors brevity, rough edges, and a conversational sense of humor; unlike post-hardcore, it generally pursues catchy momentum rather than heaviness or dramatic dynamics. Its appeal lies in turning small, messy feelings into fast, funny, and remarkably cathartic songs.
