lowlands 2009

“Lowlands 2009” is not a genre in the conventional sense, but an event-specific tag referring to the music presented at the 2009 edition of the Dutch A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise festival. Its sound was consequently broad rather than stylistically unified: guitar-led indie and alternative rock stood alongside post-punk-influenced bands, Dutch acts, electronic music, jazz, hip-hop, and experimental performances.

Within its rock-oriented selection, groups such as The Maccabees, The Virgins, Moke, A Brand, and the abrasive Dutch duo Aux Raus represent the festival’s contemporary indie and alternative edge. Nina Kinert added a more intimate, melodic singer-songwriter dimension, while artists such as 2000 and One and Benjamin Herman point beyond the guitar-based categories suggested by neighboring rock tags. The defining quality of “Lowlands 2009” is therefore not a fixed tempo, instrumentation, or lyrical style, but the eclectic, boundary-crossing atmosphere of a major Dutch festival at the end of the 2000s—a snapshot of adventurous live music rather than a standalone genre.
