meme rap

Meme rap is an internet-native strain of hip-hop built around absurdity, recognizable online references, deliberately exaggerated personas, and the rapid circulation of jokes through platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and SoundCloud. Its production may borrow from trap’s booming 808s, cloud rap’s hazy electronics, or deliberately crude lo-fi recording, while lyrics and delivery often embrace shitposting, parody, non sequiturs, and instantly quotable hooks. The genre is less a fixed musical formula than a way of making and distributing rap: the meme, visual gag, or viral premise is often as important as the song itself.

Unlike comedy rap, which can present conventional songwriting with humorous lyrics, meme rap is typically shaped by online in-jokes, remix culture, and an intentionally disposable or surreal aesthetic. Some artists associated with its wider orbit, including Yung Gravy, bbno$, DBangz, DigBar, and Lil Mosquito Disease, move freely between novelty records, trap, and more conventional internet rap; no single sound or level of seriousness defines the field. At its best, meme rap turns the speed and strangeness of online culture into infectious hooks and oddly inventive production—a genre worth hearing for its irreverence, immediacy, and refusal to respect rap’s usual boundaries.
