Neo-swing is a late-20th-century revival of swing-era dance music, emerging particularly from the Southern California club scene in the 1990s. It preserves the driving rhythms, horn-led arrangements, walking bass, and exuberant vocals of jazz and big-band swing while adding elements of rockabilly, punk, ska, blues, and contemporary pop production. The result is generally tighter, louder, and more overtly theatrical than historical swing, with an emphasis on energetic dancing and live-show spectacle.
Groups such as Squirrel Nut Zippers, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Royal Crown Revue, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers, Indigo Swing, and Atomic Fireballs represent the style’s range—from polished horn orchestras and vintage vocal jazz to irreverent, guitar-driven hybrids. Unlike a straight revival of swing jazz, neo-swing treats the earlier style as a foundation for modern songwriting, amplified performance, and subcultural presentation rather than as a strict historical reconstruction. Its appeal lies in that combination of rhythmic immediacy, brassy color, wit, and celebratory momentum: music that sounds rooted in the past but was designed to move a contemporary dance floor.
