Operatic metal is a form of heavy metal built around the dramatic scale and vocal language of opera. Emerging chiefly in Europe during the late 1980s and 1990s, it combines distorted guitars, prominent drums, orchestral or keyboard arrangements, choirs, and classically trained singing—often including soprano, tenor, baritone, or multiple contrasting voices. Its songs may adopt recurring themes, character-like vocal exchanges, and theatrical narratives rather than relying solely on the verse-chorus format.

Although it frequently overlaps with symphonic metal, operatic metal places greater emphasis on operatic composition and performance: vocal technique, choral writing, dramatic tension, and a sense of staged narrative are central rather than merely ornamental. It can share gothic metal’s darkness and grandiosity, while more adventurous groups may incorporate progressive structures or unusual rhythms, but its defining identity remains the fusion of metal’s weight with opera’s theatrical voice and architecture. The result can range from solemn and liturgical to extravagant, surreal, or cinematic.
