The Paisley Underground was a loosely connected Los Angeles scene that emerged in the early 1980s, reviving and reshaping the sounds of 1960s psychedelic rock, garage rock, folk rock, and the jangling guitar music associated with the Byrds. Its music typically combines ringing twelve-string guitars, chiming harmonies, fuzz and reverb, melodic songwriting, and occasional extended, exploratory passages. Rather than simply reproducing vintage psychedelia, the scene filtered those influences through the energy and independence of early alternative rock.
The genre’s defining character lies as much in its shared cultural moment as in a fixed sound: Rain Parade, The Dream Syndicate, The Three O’Clock, Green on Red, The Bangles, The Long Ryders, Opal, and The Pandoras each approached the style differently, ranging from dreamy and ornate to gritty, rootsy, or guitar-driven. This breadth distinguishes Paisley Underground from straightforward jangle pop while its historical revivalism gives it a more specific identity than broadly defined neo-psychedelia. It remains essential listening for its vivid guitar textures, strong melodies, and unusually inventive conversation with rock’s past.
