seapunk

Seapunk is an early-2010s internet-born microgenre and visual aesthetic built around aquatic imagery, neon colors, 3D dolphins, and an exaggerated vision of ’90s digital culture. Musically, it combines glossy synthesizers, house and Eurodance melodies, Miami bass rhythms, chopped vocal samples, and the booming low end of Southern hip-hop and trap. The style is often bright, artificial, and deliberately cartoonish rather than naturalistic or atmospheric. Key practitioners and associated figures include Ultrademon, Blank Banshee, VAPERROR, and Unicorn Kid.

Although it shares vaporwave’s fascination with obsolete media and online nostalgia, seapunk is generally more rhythmic, colorful, and outwardly playful; its bass-heavy momentum also separates it from chillwave’s hazy indie-pop softness and from ambient music’s emphasis on suspension and texture. Seapunk’s boundaries are intentionally unstable, since its music, fashion, artwork, and meme culture developed together through platforms such as Tumblr and SoundCloud. It is best heard as both a compact electronic sound and a vivid piece of internet folklore: ephemeral, absurd, and unusually effective at turning synthetic nostalgia into dance music.
