Southern rap emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s from cities across the American South—Houston, Atlanta, Memphis, New Orleans, and Miami—challenging the East Coast and West Coast dominance of hip-hop. The genre is characterized by its distinct regional production styles: booming 808 bass, slower tempos, call-and-response hooks, and heavy use of synthesizers and live instrumentation. Lyrically, Southern rap balances street narratives with regional pride, slang, and cultural identity, often delivered in drawled, melodic flows that contrast sharply with the rapid-fire delivery common in other rap traditions.

While dirty south emphasizes raw, trunk-rattling production and trap focuses specifically on the Atlanta drug trade aesthetic with hi-hat rolls and minimalist beats, Southern rap serves as the broader umbrella encompassing diverse subregional sounds—from Houston's chopped and screwed technique to Memphis's dark, lo-fi crunk and New Orleans's bounce-driven bounce music. It laid the foundation for gangsta rap's Southern interpretation while maintaining playful, party-oriented elements absent in harder-edged subgenres.
