surge

Surge is a loose internet-rap and electronic underground style built from blown-out 808s, clipped percussion, abrasive digital effects, and ominous or fantastical synths. Emerging from SoundCloud-centered scenes in the late 2010s and early 2020s, it draws on trap, cloud rap, witch house, plugg, and experimental electronic music, but pushes their textures toward overload: vocals may be heavily pitched, layered, or distorted, while the production often feels compressed, unstable, and deliberately synthetic. Luci4, Yabujin, Reptilian Club Boyz, Diamondsonmydick, Axxturel, and related artists represent different points within this broad network rather than a single fixed sound.

Compared with cloud rap’s spacious haze, surge is more kinetic and abrasive; unlike neo-psychedelia, its altered atmosphere is usually produced through digital clipping, vocal processing, and trap rhythm rather than organic psychedelia. It can overlap with sigilkore and crushed trap, though those labels more narrowly emphasize occult imagery or extreme distortion, while “surge” often describes the overall rush of energy, momentum, and online-scene hybridity. Its appeal lies in that tension between ugliness and atmosphere: music that sounds damaged, futuristic, and emotionally immediate, yet remains catchy beneath the noise.
