Techstep is a dark, minimalist subgenre of drum and bass that emerged in the mid-1990s as a stark departure from the amen-break-driven jungle sound. Characterized by cold, metallic production aesthetics, sparse arrangements, and emphasis on precise, syncopated half-time rhythms, techstep strips away melodic ornamentation in favor of industrial textures, dystopian atmospheres, and meticulous sound design. The genre typically operates at the standard drum and bass tempo of 170-180 BPM but employs steppy, robotic drum patterns and menacing basslines that sound engineered rather than sampled, often drawing from science fiction and cyberpunk imagery.

Where neurofunk would later expand techstep's sound palette with complex, modulated basslines and surgical precision, and darkstep would intensify the aggression with horror-inspired sampling, techstep maintains a clinical, stripped-back approach—favoring architectural sound construction over emotional density. Unlike liquid funk's soulful warmth, techstep remains resolutely mechanical and austere, focusing on spatial dynamics and the interplay between sparse percussion and cavernous low-end frequencies. Its influence reshaped drum and bass production standards, introducing a more technically rigorous, studio-focused methodology that prioritized sonic clarity and futuristic minimalism.
