Tejano is the Mexican American popular music of Texas, shaped by Mexican song traditions and the polkas, waltzes, and instrumentation brought by German, Czech, and Polish immigrants. Its classic sound centers on accordion and bajo sexto, with bass and drums providing a firm dance pulse; orquesta-based styles add saxophones, brass, and keyboards. From the conjunto traditions represented by Lydia Mendoza and Flaco Jiménez to the polished bands of Sunny & the Sunliners, La Mafia, Mazz, and Texas Tornados, Tejano reflects the cultural history of the Texas-Mexico borderlands.
The genre can incorporate cumbia, ranchera, and contemporary pop, but its identity lies in their transformation through Texas musicianship, regional dance rhythms, and Mexican American perspective. In the 1980s and 1990s, artists such as Selena, Emilio Navaira, Bobby Pulido, Intocable, Grupo Limite, and Jennifer Peña expanded Tejano’s reach with synthesizers, crossover production, and romantic songwriting without abandoning its accordion-driven foundation. Whether heard in a lively conjunto performance or a polished modern hit, Tejano offers an energetic, deeply rooted meeting point between border culture, dance music, and popular song.
