the cool kids

“The Cool Kids” is not an established music genre but the name of an American hip-hop duo formed by Chuck Inglish and Sir Michael Rocks in Chicago in the mid-2000s. Their music is built around spare, hard-hitting drum-machine rhythms, thick bass, crisp electronic samples, and playful, self-assured rap performances. Drawing on ’80s and ’90s hip-hop while using an intentionally futuristic production style, the duo helped define a stylish strain of alternative rap during the late-2000s blog era.

Rather than describing a broad category alongside hip-hop, rap, pop, instrumental hip-hop, or nerdcore, the term is best used as an artist name or as shorthand for the duo’s particular sound: minimalist, fashion-conscious, witty, and rhythmically direct. G-Eazy and unrelated tag entries such as “Selective Hearing” should not be treated as representative artists. For listeners, The Cool Kids’ appeal lies in the contrast between stripped-down production and larger-than-life personality—a sleek, instantly recognizable take on rap.
