trill

Trill is a strain of Southern hip-hop rooted in the Gulf Coast, particularly Houston, whose name combines “true” and “real.” Emerging through the work of artists such as UGK and the broader Texas rap tradition, it is marked by deep bass, unhurried grooves, drawled delivery, and lyrics centered on street life, loyalty, ambition, hardship, and personal authenticity. Its production may incorporate funk samples, ominous synths, chopped-and-screwed techniques, or the darker Memphis influence heard in the music of Three 6 Mafia.

Unlike trap, which is more specifically defined by its hi-hat patterns and drum programming, or cloud rap, which favors hazy, weightless atmospheres, trill is primarily an attitude and regional sensibility: grounded, self-assured, and committed to lived experience. Later artists including Bun B, Rick Ross, A$AP Rocky, SpaceGhostPurrp, and $uicideboy$ have drawn on or reinterpreted its bass-heavy Southern vocabulary, though not all of their work belongs strictly to the genre. Trill is worth hearing for its combination of low-slung musical force and plainspoken credibility—music that turns regional identity into a defining sound.
