Zoomergaze is an informal 2020s internet label for a digitally circulated revival of shoegaze, shaped by streaming platforms, online bedroom production, and short-form video culture. Its music typically combines dense, overdriven guitars, blurred vocals, and dreamlike atmosphere with emo-inflected melodies, compact song structures, and a more immediate, youthful intensity than much of the genre’s 1990s source material. The term is descriptive rather than a rigorously defined movement, and its boundaries remain fluid.
Compared with noise rock, zoomergaze usually places greater emphasis on melody and emotional immersion than on confrontation; unlike grunge, it favors smeared texture and inward-looking vulnerability over blues-rooted riffing. It can also be more abrasive and guitar-heavy than dreamier forms of indie rock or noise pop, while retaining their accessibility. Artists commonly associated with this online revival include quannnic, Julie, Glixen, Narrow Head, and, as an important preceding influence, Whirr.
Zoomergaze is compelling for the way it turns familiar shoegaze materials into a distinctly contemporary language: huge guitar wash, intimate digital melancholy, and songs that feel equally at home in headphones, bedroom recordings, and algorithm-driven discovery.
